SAAVY HER: A mobile app to optimize HIV prevention and sexual and reproductiveNational Institute of Mental Health (NIH)

Project Type: Research

Sexual/HIV Health Electronic Empowerment Resource (Savvy HER) focuses on an HIV prevention priority: Black women in the South. One in 48 Black women will be diagnosed with HIV in her lifetime. Although HIV incidence in women has declined, Black women continue to be disproportionately affected. In 2016, Black women accounted for 61% of newly diagnosed HIV infections among women in the U.S., yet they only comprise 13.7% of the U.S. female population. Eight of ten states with the highest rates of new HIV diagnoses are in the South and Black women account for 69% of all HIV diagnoses among women in the South. Researchers created an effective, sustainable, and culturally relevant HIV prevention app for Black women (Savvy HER) to educate women about prevention, testing, and treatment for other STIs –in addition to HIV

The goal of this project is to better develop and test our mobile app, . This app is uses on-the-go, culturally relevant messaging and delivery methods specifically made for Black women of reproductive age. This project is a collaboration with Emory University and Georgia Tech.
